How to Build a Wooden Fence Step by Step
People install fence on their property for various reasons. Basic fence installation requires few tools or specialized skills, so even projects on a budget can be within reach for those willing to take a DIY approach.
Use the four steps below as an outline to help you plan your fencing project. Keep in mind that there will be variations based on your fence materials, style, and yard layout.
1. Check your city or town’s fencing regulations
Every city and town has ordinances and bylaws. These often including zoning regulations for projects such as fence building. Make sure to do a little research before you begin building, so you know whether you will need to obtain a permit or follow any specific guidelines such as height restrictions etc.
TIP: Condo and homeowner associations (HOA) often want all structures to match, so if you are part of an HOA you will likely have even less wiggle room when it comes to fence style, height, and maintenance.
2. Be a good neighbor
No one likes surprises. Before installing your fence, be a good neighbor and make your intentions clear to those adjacent to your property. If property line issues exist, resolve them before installation.
TIP: It’s common practice to put the finished side of your fence facing the street and your neighbor’s yard.
3. Map out your property line and mark underground utilities
Never estimate your property line - you’ll risk having to tear your fence down later. Study your house line drawing or plat or order a new survey from a land surveyor who can mark out the boundaries. You’ll also need to call Dig Safe, it’s the law!
TIP: Most professional fence contractors install a foot inside the property line, just to be on the safe side.
